The most photographed of Kaiping's villages, Zili is a working hamlet where fifteen ornate diaolou and garden-villas rise straight out of the rice fields and lotus ponds — a postcard of the overseas-Chinese era.
History & culture
Built mainly in the 1920s–30s with money sent home from North America, Zili's towers (such as the elegant Mingshi Lou) preserve original imported furnishings, clocks and family photos behind their fortified facades.
What to see & do
- ◆Mingshi Lou and its preserved interiors
- ◆Reflections of towers in the paddy water
- ◆Lotus ponds and village lanes
- ◆Period furniture and family heirlooms inside the towers
- ◆Sunrise and golden-hour photography
What to eat
- ●Simple village rice and noodle meals
- ●Kaiping eel clay-pot rice (nearby Chikan)
- ●Seasonal lotus-root dishes
Getting there
Reached by car from Kaiping town (~20–30 min); easiest as part of a Kaiping diaolou day with a hired driver or tour.
Avoid the pitfalls
- It's a living village — keep to paths and respect residents' homes and crops.
- Go early or late for soft light and fewer tour groups.
- Tower stairs are steep and narrow; watch your step.
