Suzhou 苏州

Classical gardens and silk canals

Often called the 'Venice of the East', Suzhou pairs UNESCO-listed classical gardens with stone canals, whitewashed water towns and a 2,500-year silk tradition — an easy, refined day trip from Shanghai.

History & culture

Founded in 514 BC, Suzhou flourished as a centre of silk, scholarship and garden design during the Ming and Qing dynasties, when wealthy officials built intricate private gardens as miniature universes of rock, water and pavilion.

What to see & do

  • The Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden
  • Pingjiang Road canal-side old quarter
  • Suzhou Museum (designed by I. M. Pei)
  • A boat ride in the Tongli or Zhouzhuang water towns
  • Silk Museum and a working silk workshop

What to eat

  • Squirrel-shaped mandarin fish
  • Biluochun green tea
  • Suzhou-style sweet mooncakes and pastries

Getting there

High-speed trains reach Suzhou from Shanghai in ~25-30 minutes. The metro connects the station to the gardens and old town.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • Visit gardens at opening or late afternoon — midday tour groups are dense.
  • Zhouzhuang is beautiful but very commercial; smaller Tongli feels more authentic.
  • Buy 'silk' only from reputable shops; street 'pure silk' is often blended.
