A remarkably complete walled town frozen in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Pingyao was the Wall Street of 19th-century China — birthplace of the country's first banks. Inside its 6 km ramparts, the old street grid survives intact.
History & culture
Founded over 2,700 years ago, Pingyao rose to wealth in the Qing dynasty when its 'piaohao' draft banks moved silver across the empire. Spared modern redevelopment, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Getting there
Pingyao Ancient City has its own high-speed rail station (~3-4h from Beijing, ~1h from Taiyuan). The walled town is walking-only inside.
Avoid the pitfalls
- A single multi-day pass covers most sights — buy it once rather than per attraction.
- Stay overnight in a courtyard guesthouse; the lantern-lit streets after day-trippers leave are the highlight.
- Cars can't enter the old town — pack light or use an electric cart.
