Pingyao 平遥

A walled Qing-era banking town

A remarkably complete walled town frozen in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Pingyao was the Wall Street of 19th-century China — birthplace of the country's first banks. Inside its 6 km ramparts, the old street grid survives intact.

History & culture

Founded over 2,700 years ago, Pingyao rose to wealth in the Qing dynasty when its 'piaohao' draft banks moved silver across the empire. Spared modern redevelopment, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

What to see & do

  • Walking the full circuit of the ancient city wall
  • Rishengchang, China's first draft bank
  • Ming-Qing Street courtyards and merchant mansions
  • The county yamen (old government office)
  • Day trip to the Qiao Family Compound nearby

What to eat

  • Shanxi knife-shaved noodles (dao xiao mian)
  • Pingyao beef
  • Aged Shanxi vinegar dishes

Getting there

Pingyao Ancient City has its own high-speed rail station (~3-4h from Beijing, ~1h from Taiyuan). The walled town is walking-only inside.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • A single multi-day pass covers most sights — buy it once rather than per attraction.
  • Stay overnight in a courtyard guesthouse; the lantern-lit streets after day-trippers leave are the highlight.
  • Cars can't enter the old town — pack light or use an electric cart.
