Neijiang 内江

Sweet city of painters and sugar

On the Tuo River in central-south Sichuan, Neijiang was historically the 'Sweet City' of sugarcane wealth and is celebrated as the home of the modern ink-painting master Zhang Daqian.

History & culture

Prosperous from Ming–Qing sugar production, Neijiang fostered a strong scholarly and artistic culture, producing the internationally renowned 20th-century painter Zhang Daqian, honoured here with a dedicated museum.

What to see & do

  • Zhang Daqian Museum and memorial
  • Shengshui Temple's Tang grottoes
  • Tuo River old districts
  • Longchang's stone memorial archways (nearby)
  • Sugar-culture heritage sites

What to eat

  • Qiulin pickled-pepper dishes
  • Sichuan beef and rabbit specialties
  • Local rice noodles

Getting there

High-speed rail (Neijiang North) connects to Chengdu and Chongqing in under an hour; it's a central basin hub.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • It's a workaday city — go for Zhang Daqian and local culture, not big attractions.
  • Some sights (Longchang arches) are in neighbouring counties; plan transport.
  • Limited English; carry Chinese addresses.
