Luzhou 泸州

The wine city of the Yangtze

A river port in southeast Sichuan where the Tuo meets the Yangtze, Luzhou is one of China's great baijiu capitals — home of Luzhou Laojiao — set near misty mountains and old fortified villages.

History & culture

A wine-making centre since the Ming dynasty, Luzhou's continuously used cellars are national heritage; the city was also a strategic river crossing and trade gateway between Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou.

What to see & do

  • Luzhou Laojiao's centuries-old distilling cellars
  • Fangshan and Yuchan mountain scenery
  • Yutan ancient town
  • Riverside old streets and docks
  • Hejiang's dinosaur and Han-tomb relics

What to eat

  • Luzhou baijiu
  • Spicy river fish and frog hotpot
  • Guolian-style noodles and bean jelly

Getting there

Luzhou Yunlong Airport and high-speed rail (Luzhou) connect to Chengdu and Chongqing; it's close to the Chongqing side of the basin.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • Distillery visits may need arrangement — check ahead for tours.
  • It's more an industrial river city than a polished tourist town.
  • Mountain and ancient-town sights are dispersed; a car helps.
