A fairy-tale alpine valley in northern Sichuan, Jiuzhaigou is famed for impossibly blue and green lakes, terraced travertine pools and waterfalls, framed by snow peaks and Tibetan villages.
History & culture
Named for nine ancient Tibetan ('zhai') villages within the valley, Jiuzhaigou has long been home to Amdo Tibetan and Qiang communities. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 for its rare karst water landscapes.

Avoid the pitfalls
- It sits at 2,000–3,100 m — take altitude gently and keep warm; weather changes fast.
- Daily visitor numbers are capped and tickets sell out — book online in advance.
- Autumn colour (October) is stunning but extremely crowded; go on weekdays.
