Hongcun 宏村

A 900-year-old village shaped like an ox

The clearest answer to 'can I really go down to the village level?' — Hongcun is a living UNESCO World Heritage village of whitewashed Huizhou houses mirrored in still ponds, near Mount Huangshan.

History & culture

Founded in the Southern Song dynasty (12th c.) by the Wang clan, Hongcun was laid out in the shape of an ox, with an ingenious water system of channels and the crescent Moon Pond at its 'stomach'. Its Huizhou merchant architecture is exceptionally preserved.

What to see & do

  • South Lake and the Moon Pond reflections at dawn
  • Chengzhi Hall, a richly carved merchant mansion
  • Narrow water-lane walks between Ming–Qing houses
  • Combine with sunrise on nearby Mount Huangshan

What to eat

  • Huizhou stinky mandarin fish
  • Bamboo shoots and mountain vegetables
  • Maofeng green tea from the surrounding hills

Getting there

High-speed rail to Huangshan North, then ~1–1.5h by bus or car to Hongcun. Often paired with a Mount Huangshan trip.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • Stay overnight inside the village — it empties of day-trippers and is magical at dawn and dusk.
  • Entry tickets are valid for a few days; keep yours for re-entry.
  • Weekends and holidays are very crowded; go midweek if you can.
