Fuzhou 福州

Banyan city of lanes and hot springs

Fujian's green provincial capital, Fuzhou is the 'Banyan City' — a relaxed place of restored old lanes, urban hot springs and a strong overseas-Chinese heritage, on the Min River near the Taiwan Strait.

History & culture

A port and prefectural seat for over 2,000 years, Fuzhou prospered on tea and lacquer exports and sent many emigrants abroad. Its Three Lanes and Seven Alleys preserve a rare ensemble of Ming–Qing scholar-official homes.

What to see & do

  • Three Lanes and Seven Alleys (Sanfang Qixiang)
  • Gushan (Drum Mountain) and Yongquan Temple
  • Soaking in a city hot-spring bath
  • Shangxiahang historic trading street
  • Forest park and West Lake gardens

What to eat

  • Buddha Jumps Over the Wall (a lavish seafood soup)
  • Fish balls stuffed with pork
  • Lychee meat (litchi rou)

Getting there

Changle International Airport and high-speed rail (Fuzhou and Fuzhou South) connect widely along the coast; the metro reaches the old lanes.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • It's a livable, low-key capital — set expectations for atmosphere over blockbuster sights.
  • The old lanes get busy at night and on weekends; mornings are calmer.
  • Summers are hot and humid with typhoon risk — check forecasts.
