Foshan 佛山

Cradle of Cantonese kung fu and ceramics

Just southwest of Guangzhou, Foshan is the heartland of Lingnan culture — the home town of martial-arts legends Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man, and a thousand-year centre of folk ceramics.

History & culture

A major handicraft and trading town since the Ming dynasty, Foshan grew famous for its kilns, ironwork and Cantonese opera, and became a celebrated cradle of southern Chinese martial arts.

What to see & do

  • Ancestral Temple (Zumiao) and its martial-arts halls
  • Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, fired continuously for 500 years
  • Lingnan Tiandi heritage streets
  • Ip Man and Wong Fei-hung memorial halls
  • Liang's Garden, a classic Lingnan garden

What to eat

  • Shunde-style steamed fish and milk desserts
  • Double-skin milk pudding (shuangpinai)
  • Cantonese rice-noodle rolls

Getting there

Foshan adjoins Guangzhou and shares its metro; high-speed rail stops at Foshan West. Easy as a day trip from Guangzhou.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • Sights are spread across districts — group them by area to avoid long transfers.
  • Nearby Shunde is the real foodie destination; budget a meal-focused half-day there.
  • Combine with Guangzhou rather than treating it as a standalone trip.
