Dapeng Fortress 大鹏所城

A Ming garrison by the sea

On a peninsula at Shenzhen's far eastern edge, Dapeng Fortress is a 600-year-old walled garrison town — Shenzhen's historic heart — surrounded by some of the city's best beaches and coastal hiking.

History & culture

Built in 1394 as a Ming coastal defence against pirates, the fortress (Dapeng Suocheng) gave Shenzhen its old name 'Peng City'. It preserves stone gates, generals' mansions and temple-lined lanes.

What to see & do

  • The walled fortress's gates and generals' residences
  • Old temple-lined stone lanes
  • Nearby Xichong and Dongchong beaches
  • Coastal hiking on the Dapeng Peninsula
  • Jiaochangwei seaside village

What to eat

  • Dapeng seafood and oyster dishes
  • Cantonese clay-pot rice
  • Fresh-caught fish by the harbour

Getting there

About 1.5–2h from central Shenzhen by bus or car (no metro to the fortress yet); easiest with a car, paired with the beaches.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • It's far from downtown Shenzhen — plan a full day and check return transport.
  • Summer weekends and holidays jam the peninsula roads; start early.
  • Some beaches require advance day-passes in peak season.
