Daocheng Yading 稻城亚丁

The last pure land of blue planet

Deep in the high Kham region of western Sichuan, Daocheng Yading is a breathtaking alpine sanctuary of three sacred snow peaks, turquoise glacial lakes and golden autumn forests — one of China's most spectacular treks.

History & culture

Long revered by Tibetans as a holy land guarded by three deity-mountains (Chenrezig, Jampelyang and Chana Dorje), the Yading reserve drew wider fame in the 20th century through explorers' accounts of its untouched beauty.

What to see & do

  • The three sacred peaks, led by Mount Chenrezig
  • Milk Lake and Five-Colour Lake high hikes
  • Luorong pasture beneath the glaciers
  • Golden larch forests in October
  • Tibetan monasteries around Daocheng

What to eat

  • Tibetan butter tea and tsampa
  • Yak meat hotpot
  • Highland barley dishes

Getting there

Daocheng Yading Airport is the world's highest civil airport (~4,400 m); alternatively a multi-day scenic drive from Chengdu. The reserve uses shuttle buses.

Avoid the pitfalls

  • Extreme altitude (3,700–4,700 m) — acclimatise, go slow, and consider altitude precautions.
  • Flying straight in to the high airport can hit you hard; rest on arrival.
  • Weather is fierce and changeable; pack serious warm and waterproof gear.
